Toy Cleaning & Sanitation Policy

Nobody likes borrowing dirty materials, especially when they will be handled by young learners. We have created this Toy Cleaning & Sanitation Policy to maintain a clean library inventory to be enjoyed by all.

User Requirements
When a member is ready to return a toy to the Family Resource Center, they must first take the following steps to ensure a clean toy upon return:

  • Inspect the toy to determine if all the parts are gathered and intact. If there is an issue with any toy, please notify our support staff by emailing hello@kscopelearning.org or mentioning the issue in-person while returning the item.

  • Wash any visible dirt, crumbs, dust, etc. off the toy with warm water and soap.

  • Disinfect the toy by wiping it with disinfecting wipes (Clorox, Lysol, etc.) or spraying it with a disinfectant solution/bleach solution. If using a disinfecting spray solution, let the disinfectant sit for one minute before wiping it away. See our Bleach Disinfectant section to learn how to make your own solution at home. For items that might be mouthed by infants or toddlers, please wash the item with warm water after disinfecting.

  • Allow the item to fully dry.

  • Return the item to its Family Resource Center container (if it has one).

For soft items, please launder any fabric pieces that can be laundered. When laundering playsilks, wash on a delicate cycle and hang-dry (never tumble/heat dry). For speciality soft materials, we will have specific directions on how to properly clean/sanitize the items on their MyTurn descriptions.

Do not submerge electronic items in water for cleaning. Gently wipe the item with a disinfecting wipe to remove dirty/grime and properly sanitize.

If you have a question about how to properly clean a specific item from our inventory, please reach out to our Family Resource Center staff by emailing hello@kscopelearning.org or calling (651) 340-1413.

If a member family or user receives a toy that does not meet our cleanliness standards, immediately contact our in-person coordinator at hello@kscopelearning.org. We would be happy to assist you with cleaning the toy or finding a replacement.

Do not remove any barcodes from items or containers. This helps our staff re-shelve items and update their status in MyTurn.

Bleach Solution Recommendation:
Four teaspoons bleach per one quart of water.

Our Internal Protocol:
Upon receiving a toy that has been borrowed, our in-person coordinator will do a visible inspection of the material to ensure that it is still in working order. If it is in working condition, with no potential injury hazards, our staff will do the following:

  • Remove any visible dirt with warm water and soap.

  • Disinfect the toy by wiping it with disinfecting wipes (Clorox, Lysol, etc.) or spraying it with a disinfectant solution/bleach solution. Let the disinfectant sit for one minute before wiping it away. For items that might be mouthed by infants or toddlers, wash item with warm water after disinfecting.

  • Allow the items to fully dry before re-bagging and re-shelving.

If an item needs additional cleaning, maintenance, or repairs, we will mark the item “in maintenance” on MyTurn. The Kaleidoscope Learning staff has the right to determine if an item is no longer suitable or safe to continue being in the Educational Materials Library inventory.

Kaleidoscope Learning and its affiliate organizations, such as but not limited to Monarch Montessori School, have the right to terminate any user’s membership to the Family Resource Center for not complying with the Kaleidoscope Learning Toy Cleaning and Sanitation Policy.
